Jaeger-LeCoultre Unveils Calibre 101 Chain: A New Expression of High Jewellery Watchmaking

Full presentation of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 101 Chain jewellery watch in pink gold with black ceramic detailing and diamonds.

Jaeger-LeCoultre has introduced the Calibre 101 Chain, a striking new jewellery watch combining 18-carat pink gold, diamonds and glossy black ceramic composite. Inspired by a design from the 1950s, the creation showcases one of watchmaking’s smallest mechanical movements within a contemporary sculptural bangle.

Swiss luxury watchmaker Jaeger-LeCoultre has unveiled the Calibre 101 Chain, a new high jewellery timepiece that brings together intricate gem-setting, innovative materials and the extraordinary art of miniature mechanical watchmaking.

Announced on 13 October 2026, the creation reinterprets the Maison’s longstanding tradition of jewellery watches through a bold, contemporary design. Its sculptural bangle combines 18-carat pink gold with contrasting bands of black HyCeram® and brilliant-cut white diamonds, while a discreet black lacquer dial conceals one of the most remarkable movements in watchmaking history.

At its heart is Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Calibre 101, a mechanical movement first introduced in 1929 that remains the world’s smallest rectangular manually wound mechanical calibre.

A Contemporary Interpretation of a 1955 Design

Although the Calibre 101 Chain introduces a distinctly modern aesthetic, its inspiration reaches back more than seven decades.

The new creation pays tribute to a celebrated 1955 Duoplan watch nicknamed Chain, distinguished by a braided bracelet formed from substantial polished pink-gold links. Jaeger-LeCoultre has revisited elements of that original design, incorporating sculptural detailing along the sides of the new bangle while introducing a striking contrast between precious metal, gemstones and advanced ceramic materials.

Rather than beginning with the movement or watch case, the Maison approached the project from the perspective of jewellery design. Its designers first developed the bracelet’s shape, decorative elements and diamond setting before integrating the watch itself.

As Jaeger-LeCoultre explains in its official announcement:

Instead of starting with the case, they first designed the form of the bracelet, the style of the gem-setting, and the ornamentation.

The approach allowed the Calibre 101 Chain to develop as a piece of high jewellery in its own right, with its timekeeping function integrated into the finished design.

The Calibre 101: A Remarkable Achievement in Miniature Watchmaking

The technical significance of the new creation lies in the mechanical movement housed within its exceptionally small watch case.

First introduced in 1929, Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Calibre 101 was developed from the innovative Duoplan architecture patented in 1925. By arranging components across two levels, the earlier movement provided a solution to one of watchmaking’s longstanding challenges: reducing the size of a mechanism without sacrificing its functionality.

The original Calibre 101 measured just 14mm long, 4.8mm wide and 3.4mm thick, containing 74 components within a movement weighing approximately one gram.

Almost a century later, its fundamental architecture and dimensions remain unchanged, although the movement has evolved considerably. The current fifth-generation version contains 98 individual components, each requiring exceptional precision during production and assembly.

According to Jaeger-LeCoultre, assembling a single Calibre 101 movement takes approximately 40 hours, with production limited to just a few dozen movements each year.

This extraordinary level of precision and craftsmanship also highlights some of the qualities that distinguish exceptional mechanical timepieces, as explored in our guide to what makes a luxury watch worth the money.

Despite its remarkable dimensions, the manually wound mechanism provides a 33-hour power reserve and displays the hours and minutes through a miniature dial.

Its continued production represents an extraordinary achievement in fine watchmaking, particularly given the technological developments that have transformed the wider industry since its introduction.

Pink Gold, Diamonds and the Innovation of HyCeram®

While the Calibre 101 provides the technical foundation, the exterior of the new watch demonstrates an equally meticulous approach to craftsmanship.

The Calibre 101 Chain features an 18-carat pink-gold bangle decorated with alternating diagonal bands of brilliant-cut diamonds and glossy black HyCeram®, a ceramic composite selected for its intense colour and reflective finish.

Creating the bangle involves a highly specialised process. Jaeger-LeCoultre produces a dedicated mould for each individual timepiece before refining the gold surface and preparing 36 precisely shaped cavities for the black ceramic composite.

Artisans carefully inject liquid HyCeram® into these openings, using a controlled combination of heat and pressure to cure the material before polishing it to achieve a smooth, mirror-like appearance.

The bangle then passes to a master gem-setter within the Maison’s Métiers Rares atelier, where 158 brilliant-cut diamonds, weighing approximately 2.73 carats, are individually set by hand.

Only after this extensive jewellery-making process is complete does the miniature watch, featuring a black lacquer dial and diamond-set bezel, become part of the finished bangle.

Jaeger-LeCoultre reports that the Calibre 101 Chain required more than 300 hours of technical research and development, reflecting the complexity of combining traditional goldsmithing and gem-setting techniques with modern materials.

When High Jewellery Becomes a Timepiece

The Calibre 101 Chain continues a tradition in which watches have served as both practical instruments and expressions of personal style.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, elaborate jewellery watches were closely associated with European royalty and wealthy patrons. As watchmaking developed, increasingly compact mechanical movements allowed designers to create more elaborate pieces without the proportions of conventional timepieces.

Jaeger-LeCoultre’s expertise in miniaturisation has played a significant role in that evolution, enabling movements such as the Calibre 101 to be incorporated into delicate jewellery designs where mechanical complexity remains largely hidden.

With its new creation, the Maison brings this heritage into a contemporary setting. The discreet dial, sculptural pink-gold form and contrasting black detailing place the emphasis firmly on jewellery, while the mechanical movement provides an additional layer of craftsmanship for those who appreciate fine watchmaking.

What makes the Calibre 101 Chain particularly interesting is the way Jaeger-LeCoultre has reversed the usual relationship between a watch and its bracelet.

By designing the jewellery first and integrating the movement afterwards, the Maison has created a piece that does not rely on a prominent dial to communicate its value. Instead, much of its appeal lies in the sophistication of the goldwork, the careful arrangement of gemstones and the miniature engineering concealed within.

The result reflects a broader idea within modern luxury: some of the most exceptional craftsmanship is not immediately visible. In the Calibre 101 Chain, almost a century of mechanical innovation supports a design that can be appreciated just as readily as a piece of contemporary fine jewellery.
